About Us
San Lorenzo is a census-designated place unlike any other community in the East Bay — and one whose story is genuinely remarkable. Originally named Squattersville in the 1850s by settlers drawn to the fertile banks of San Lorenzo Creek, the community was formally established as a planned development in 1944 when the David D. Bohannon Company, under contract to the U.S. Navy, broke ground on San Lorenzo Village: one of the nation’s first large-scale planned communities, built to house workers in the East Bay’s wartime industries. With a population of 29,581 at the 2020 census, San Lorenzo remains an unincorporated community governed directly by Alameda County — bounded to the north by San Lorenzo Creek and San Leandro, to the south by Hayward, and to the west by the San Francisco Bay.
The residential character of San Lorenzo is defined almost entirely by that mid-century origin. The vast majority of homes in the community were built in the 1940s and 1950s by a single developer — two- and three-bedroom ranch-style and tract homes with stucco exteriors, original hardwood floors, and the compact, well-proportioned lots that were the hallmark of postwar American suburban planning.
